From 400 Points in the High School Entrance Exam to the Zhou Enlai Class at Maple Leaf — My Path of Breaking Through Barriers to Growth
I'm Xing Hongye from Class 1101. When the high school entrance exam scores were released, "400 points" hit me like a heavy blow, completely stunning me. The local public high schools in my hometown had an admission rate of less than 8%, and unsurprisingly, they shut their doors on me. During those days, I locked myself in my room, overwhelmed by waves of self-blame and uncertainty.

The turning point came late one night. My parents quietly packed our bags, and the three of us drove 1,400 kilometers through the night, heading south. Along the way, I overheard my father whisper, "Let the child give it a try. I’ve always believed my son has potential." Outside the window, the night gradually faded as the morning sun rose, casting an indigo and hazy glow over the highway. When we entered Shanghai, the towering buildings made me more anxious than excited. Little did I know then that this city would completely transform my life.
When I first arrived at Maple Leaf, the all-English teaching model left me completely at a loss. In class, even when I knew the answer, I was too nervous to raise my hand. During group discussions, I often shrank into a corner, silently listening. Fortunately, my teacher noticed me and consistently encouraged me with a warm smile, helping me gradually build a glimmer of courage.
Later, I signed up for the 6th Maple Leaf English Speech Competition. I practiced listening and speaking relentlessly and revised my speech draft again and again. My teachers patiently guided me, and my foreign teacher even secretly shared some speech techniques with me. In the end, to my surprise, I won the second prize in the Intensive Stream category. At that moment, joy and confidence washed over me like a tidal wave.
From that moment on, it was as if I had become a different person. Or perhaps, at the age of fifteen, I had truly begun to grow.
Academically, I became proactive and organized. My daily schedule was clear and structured, with time allocated for previewing lessons, reviewing materials, activities, and rest. Whenever I encountered difficult problems, I actively sought help from teachers and classmates, and always received warm and enthusiastic support. During my six months in the Intensive Program, I made rapid progress. My English level jumped from Level 5 to Level 8, and I successfully advanced to the Maple Leaf World School Program.
Today, as a member of the "Zhou Enlai Class," I study and engage in discussions with many outstanding peers, participate in public service activities, and strive to embody the spirit of perseverance and service exemplified by Premier Zhou. I can feel myself improving every day—transforming from a timid, introverted teenager into a confident and responsible dream-chaser.
I believe that each day spent in the Zhou Enlai Class will become one of the most treasured memories of my life. No matter what challenges the future may bring, this experience will continue to inspire me to break through barriers, move forward, and become the best version of myself!
The difficulty of the academic courses increased sharply in Grade 10, especially in chemistry. At one point, my exam results were disheartening. Seeing my classmates achieve high scores, I quietly made up my mind: If they can do it, so can I. I took the initiative to discuss each question with my teacher, analyzing my mistakes one by one. I persisted in reviewing every day after school, and when the next exam came over a month later, my score had improved significantly. The feeling of seeing hard work pay off was incredibly exhilarating.
Beyond academics, I participated in every school activity, from sports meets to welcome parties, and was eventually selected as a student leader. I still remember practicing for the sports meet dance: I was tall, uncoordinated, and constantly struggled to keep up with the rhythm. But my partners patiently guided me through each move, step by step. They would even laugh and good-naturedly “complain” about my mistakes — their sincere companionship made me feel truly warmed by the spirit of teamwork. My teachers also encouraged me continually, and gradually, I managed to keep up with everyone. This experience made me deeply realize: Without the collective, without teamwork, I would never have come this far.
It was around that time that I learned about the school’s "Zhou Enlai Class." The students in this class were not only academically outstanding and morally principled, embodying the spirit of Premier Zhou, but were also almost universally admitted to top 20 universities worldwide. I felt genuine admiration and a deep sense of aspiration: I wanted to be a Zhou Enlai Class student. I should be part of it—I had to be!
Driven by this goal, I devoted myself even more intensely to my studies and various activities, actively preparing for the Zhou Enlai Class interview. The challenges I had overcome along the way had gradually built my composure and self-assurance. In the end, I was successfully selected for the "Zhou Enlai Class"! When I heard the news, I could hardly believe my ears. I jumped and cheered with excitement.
