Post-assessment
Summary
Maple Leaf's English Language Program employs the PPPS (Participatory, Post-assessment, Pre-assessment, Summary) high-performance classroom teaching model, enabling full student participation. This immersive English learning environment facilitates remarkable progress in students' comprehensive English abilities. Here unfolds the story of transformation—from playing catch-up to walking alongside peers.
In my second year of junior high, I transferred from Pinghu to this new community in Shanghai. Immediately, I felt a tremendous impact—my classmates possessed exceptional abilities, especially in English. While my English had been above average in Pinghu, here I was confronted by peers with fluent oral skills, meticulously organized class notes, and passionate discussions about original English literature. I deeply understood the meaning of "there's always someone better."
My first minor English test yielded only 50%. Staring at the paper and comparing it to my classmates' confident, fluent expressions in class, I sank into confusion, even losing motivation in lessons. The gap was undeniable, and I knew I couldn't continue like this. Determined to catch up, I resolved to study diligently: memorizing vocabulary every morning, using lunch breaks for reading practice, and delving into grammar after completing homework. The start was exceptionally tough; I repeatedly made mistakes on many questions, and frustration was frequent. It was then that my deskmate extended a helping hand. Not only did she proactively share her valuable self-compiled notes, but she also patiently taught me efficient study methods. This timely help warmed my heart immensely.
The real turning point came during an English speech competition. The first draft I had carefully prepared was critiqued by the teacher for lacking substance. Just as I felt lost, my deskmate stepped up again. Sacrificing her own rest time, she analyzed my logic sentence by sentence, polished the content, and even meticulously coached me on using appropriate body language to engage the audience. On the day of the competition, standing under the spotlight and seeing the encouraging eyes of teachers and classmates in the audience, I felt an unprecedented surge of power. In that moment, I clearly sensed that those once seemingly unreachable outstanding peers were now walking beside me.
Today, while my English scores may not be the absolute top, I can confidently express my views in class. This experience taught me that "there's always someone better" is not a discouraging shackle, but a key unlocking a vast new world. In Shanghai, this land filled with challenges and opportunities, I encountered more outstanding peers, and through continuous breakthroughs, I met a more resilient, more confident version of myself. Every effort, every leap forward, has brought me steadily closer to that shining dream within my heart.
This learning journey taught me that growth often accompanies challenges and self-transcendence. I learned not only to seek light amidst adversity but also to draw strength from setbacks. More importantly, I deeply understood the immense value of teamwork and mutual support. My deskmate, along with the teachers and classmates who offered encouragement and support during difficult times, were my sturdiest anchors in this experience and the wellspring of motivation propelling me forward.
Looking ahead, I will continue to face every challenge with humility, cherishing every learning opportunity. I believe that as long as there is a dream in my heart, there will be a path beneath my feet. On the road to pursuing excellence, I will walk hand in hand with more fellow travelers, jointly writing our own splendid chapter.
Participatory Learning: The Vital Source of Confidence Boost
Maple Leaf’s ESL participatory learning fully embodies the advanced teaching philosophy of "student-centeredness." In class, students actively engage in diverse English classroom activities such as Jigsaw Reading, Gallery Walk, Role Play, Group Discussion, Debate, and English Games. These meticulously designed activities greatly stimulate student interest and foster an exceptionally dynamic classroom atmosphere. Teachers create a relaxed and inclusive classroom environment, encouraging students to try boldly and express themselves courageously. Through these activities, students collaborate and communicate in English, simultaneously enhancing their oral expression skills and teamwork spirit. Applying learned knowledge to practical contexts not only deepens understanding but also provides a strong sense of accomplishment and satisfaction upon successfully completing tasks, thereby boosting confidence. Furthermore, teachers employ differentiated instruction based on students' varying levels, offering appropriate challenges and support. Through personalized guidance, students gradually solidify the foundation of their confidence in English learning. It can be said that an English classroom centered on student participation and rich with diverse activities will inevitably fill students with confidence!
Post-assessment
During the post-assessment phase, teachers meticulously design assessment methods and questions closely aligned with the lesson objectives. Through formats such as group project presentations, individual oral expression tasks, quizzes, Q&A sessions, and short essays, they comprehensively evaluate student learning outcomes. Since the assessment content stems directly from classroom learning, well-prepared students easily achieve desirable results, gaining a sense of accomplishment and enhanced confidence. For students with weaker foundations, teachers adhere to the principle of individualized instruction, tailoring tests, formats, and questions to their specific circumstances and difficulty levels. This approach effectively helps them rebuild confidence, ignite motivation, improve learning efficiency, and progressively strengthen their overall English proficiency.
Summary
Following the post-assessment, the Summary phase begins. Teachers guide students in reviewing the key points of the lesson—such as essential vocabulary, grammar, and expression techniques—clarifying the achievement of teaching objectives. Students can visually recognize their progress in knowledge mastery, skill enhancement, and cognitive development. For example, a student who was once shy about speaking may confidently share their takeaways after classroom practice; a student who previously feared writing might realize, upon reviewing a writing task, that they can now skillfully employ various sentence structures. This clear presentation of results allows students to see the progress made in each lesson, strengthening their sense of achievement and fulfillment. This, in turn, solidifies into confidence, empowering them to advance steadily on their English learning journey.
