Hello everyone, I am Li Zhihui (Raya), a student in the Maple Leaf English Enhancement Program in Shanghai. In the blink of an eye, this semester is drawing to a close. My classmates often ask me how I jumped from English Level 5 to Level 7. Today, I’d like to share the story of my growth during this learning journey.
I joined Maple Leaf Yiwu in the first semester of Grade 9. At that time, I focused all my energy on science subjects for the high school entrance exam and neglected my English studies. As a result, I failed the subsequent English proficiency test. This setback taught me a profound lesson: I realized that if I wanted to enter the Maple Leaf World School Program, I had to obtain the "ticket" – passing English Level 7. So, I decided to transfer to the Shanghai Maple Leaf campus for the second semester of Grade 9, seeking the resources of the world curriculum to achieve my goal.
When I first arrived at Shanghai Maple Leaf, everything on campus filled me with curiosity and anticipation. Here, I met friendly classmates and teachers. More importantly, the PPPS classes in our English Enhancement Program fully engaged me in every part of the lessons while significantly improving my English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. I kept my goal crystal clear and firmly in mind. Therefore, after entering the Level 6 English Enhancement course, I threw myself wholeheartedly into my studies: actively memorizing vocabulary, carefully preparing English presentations for class, completing assignments on time, and proactively communicating with foreign teachers, never discouraged by difficulties. Ultimately, in the first proficiency exam of the semester, I entered the Level 7 English Language Arts class with outstanding results, achieving the leap from Level 6 to Level 7.
However, this upgrade also led to a period of complacency for me. Just when I thought Level 7 was "nothing special," reality hit me hard. The depth and breadth of the Level 7 curriculum far exceeded Level 6 – the vocabulary was more academic, the reading and writing demands were higher, and it placed stricter requirements on my grammar. When the results of the first mock exam were announced, regret washed over me as I looked at my disappointing score. My former pride vanished instantly, and I realized my own blind arrogance. But I didn't let this dishearten me; instead, I chose to face the challenge head-on. I revised my study plan rigorously: every morning, led by my teacher, I memorized vocabulary and model essays; during breaks, instead of playing, I raced against time to consult Chinese and foreign teachers and classmates about difficult points; after class, I actively participated in various English activities to practice speaking and enrolled in a writing tutoring class to improve my writing skills. Every practice session, every revision, became a testament to my progress. I deeply realized that active participation yields rich rewards. Gradually, my grasp of the knowledge became firmer, and I became more confident speaking up in class. Finally, I passed the Level 7 exam and secured my ticket into the international curriculum program.
Looking back on this journey from Yiwu to Shanghai, from Level 5 to Level 7, it encompassed the novelty and excitement of arriving somewhere new, the complacency and setbacks after leveling up, and the renewed effort and determination to push forward after picking myself back up. These ups and downs were not only about accumulating and improving English knowledge and skills for me but also a valuable process of mental tempering and growth. The road ahead in my studies may still be thorny, but I am prepared. Armed with the perseverance and wisdom gained from the Enhancement Program, I will continue to forge ahead courageously, climb higher peaks, unlock more wonderful experiences, and, following my seniors' footsteps, receive acceptance letters from world-renowned universities!
